10 Key Elements for Learning a New Language

1. Be Brave

Picking up a new language is not as easy as it often requires you to break out of the comfort zone. However, you will achieve tremendous success once you manage to do so. Be brave and believe in yourself.

2. Be curious

Curiosity is the most effective motivation for learning a new language. Your interest can keep you exploring the language without getting bored.

3. Have a clear objective

Trust me on this one. Learning can be much more enjoyable when you have a goal.

4. Repeat, repeat, repeat

Repeating what you learn is an extremely helpful tool for remembering the new vocabulary, grammar and phrases. Repetition of words and sentences can help you consolidate the semantic knowledge into your long-term memory store (Atkinson–Shiffrin 1968).

5. Be careful with pronunciation

Improper pronunciation can lead to ineffective communication and misunderstandings. Listen carefully to your teacher and speak slowly to perfect the pronunciation.

6. Focus on your study

You need to concentrate on your learning to make your study the most effective. Clear your desk and find a suitable environment to improve the quality of your concentration.

7. Be Practical

Learning to speak a language can take a long time so you need to keep your goals practical. Break down your learning goals into smaller pieces to make them more manageable. For example, aim to learn 10 new words every day, rather than 100.

8. Get immediate feedback

Asking for instant feedback is one of the most vital elements of making progress in your learning. Receiving instant feedback can help you reflect on your learning while the knowledge is still fresh in your mind.

9. Review your progress

Self-reflection on your study can help you find out the strengths and weaknesses of your study habits, and thus help you improve. A good form of self-reflection would be keeping a record of your study performance.

10. Don't be afraid of making mistakes

Everyone makes mistakes when learning a new language. It is alright to get things wrong. Just remember to correct them when your teacher points them out to you. Good Luck!
